"Past and present situation of freshwater pearls from North Western Russia"
Identifying pearls: natural or cultured (beaded or non-beaded), original appearance or treated?
The talk will give a systematic classification of the various types of both natural and cultured pearls and of the most frequent treatments.
Natural pearls will be presented in the historical sequence of their appearance on the market, making a distinction between the classical pearl market that exists since antiquity and prevails until today and new sources of new types of pearls that entered the market in the last two decades only.
The known methods for producing cultured pearls will be explained and classified according to countries of origin and sequence of appearance. It will be discussed in how far an understanding of those methods helps to understand x-ray testing results; the emphasis is on micro-focus radiography but x-ray-tomography and x-ray fluorescence will also be explained.
The most common treatments for both natural and cultured pearls will be listed according to their influence on a pearl’s appearance and value: bleaching, waxing, polishing, surface coatings, polymer treatment, heating, chemical treatment and artificial dyeing. Methods of distinction will be discussed.

Elisabeth Strack examines the role of both natural and cultured pearls in the last 13 years and explores changes in quality assessment, marketing strategies and price developments. Natural pearls are no longer only costly rarities but have become precious objects that are highly sought after on an international level.
Cultured pearls have undergone changes in production techniques, resulting in bigger and more colorful Akoya cultured pearls from Japan and Vietnam and an ever-increasing, equally colorful variety of freshwater pearls from China and Japan. While production in China is challenged by environmental problems and changes in the working force, the market inside China for high quality pearls is growing ever bigger. South Sea and Tahitian cultured pearls have undergone ups and downs in the last years, with fine qualities retaining their place. The latter is also true for niche producers like Mexico and the Fiji Islands. The seminar will include an overview of the pearl situation in the western market and will list methods for distinguishing the different types of pearls from each other. It will conclude with a forecast regarding further developments.
